The town of Union Bridge is a tiny area with town limits of only 1.05 square miles and a population of approximately 1000 residents. The town was named by the US Postal Service after a bridge was built over Little Pipe Creek. The bridge was built to unite the north and south sides, hence the name “Union Bridge”. Prior to that, the area was known as Buttersburg. Before the Revolutionary War, the area was a farming community. After the war, land was purchased and the community was gradually formed. Today, the majority of the town is on the National List of Historic Places and known as the Union Bridge Historic District. Interesting fact: Union Bridge was the first municipality in Maryland to have electric street lights.
The town limits are located in Carroll County MD. However, the outer limits extend into Frederick County MD.
